Events in Edinburgh and London discuss Church investment in climate solutions 

In the last few weeks, Operation Noah attended two events linked to our new focus on Church investment in climate solutions: the Church of Scotland General Assembly in Edinburgh and a conference in London hosted by FaithInvest and Christian Aid called, ‘Financing a Liveable Future’. The Diocese of Truro journey towards net zero and investment in climate solutions

Mike Sturgess, Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance for the Diocese of Truro, shares the steps that the diocese has taken on its journey towards reaching net zero by 2030 and investing in climate solutions, including solar power, wind power and battery storage.

In February 2020 the Church of England’s approved its ambitious target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030. In response, the Diocese of Truro started to develop a new environmental strategy, built around the vision: Cherish Creation, Cut Carbon, Speak Out. This started with every main diocesan committee setting out its own objectives in relation to these three aspects of the strategy.

Diocese of Oxford completes divestment from fossil fuel companies

The Diocese of Oxford has completed its divestment from fossil fuel companies, becoming the first Church of England diocese to publicly announce its divestment.

Global fossil fuel divestment commitments double to more than $5 trillion in a year

On Monday 12 December, a year on from the Paris Agreement, it was revealed that the divestment movement has doubled in size since September 2015.

The newly published Divest-Invest report shows that global divestment commitments have been made by 688 institutions across 76 countries, reaching an incredible $5.2 trillion of assets under management. Furthermore, asset managers controlling $1.3 trillion – a quarter of the total – have committed to increasing their investments in clean energy to speed up the transition to a low-carbon economy.
