Record number of faith institutions launch new wave of fossil fuel divestment

Today, 47 faith institutions from 21 countries, including nine institutions from the UK, announce their divestment from fossil fuels as a practical response to the climate emergency.

Participating institutions include five Catholic religious orders in the UK, two United Reformed Church Synods, UK-based local Anglican and Methodist churches, the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (Catholic) and American Jewish World Service.

Global coalition of 42 faith institutions divest from fossil fuels

Together with our friends at the World Council of Churches, the Global Catholic Climate Movement, Green Anglicans and GreenFaith, we are pleased to share a global divestment announcement of faith organisations. 

Today, 42 faith institutions from 14 countries, including 21 from the UK, announce their divestment from fossil fuels. This is the largest-ever joint announcement of divestment from fossil fuels from faith institutions. It comes from institutions in the UK, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Myanmar, Spain and the United States.

New date for global divestment announcement: 18 May 2020

Together with our friends at the World Council of Churches, the Global Catholic Climate Movement, Green Anglicans and GreenFaith, Operation Noah has been planning a global divestment announcement for faith organisations at the end of March 2020, which was due to coincide with the Economy of Francesco conference in Assisi.

We have been following the news in recent weeks on the coronavirus outbreak here in the UK and around the world and are remembering all those affected and everyone working to control the outbreak in our prayers.
