Diocese of Newcastle makes divestment commitment and pledges support to Bright Now campaign

The Church of England Diocese of Newcastle has announced its divestment from fossil fuels and made a commitment to avoid investments in companies involved in the extraction of oil, gas and coal in future.

This decision was taken as part of the Diocese of Newcastle’s action to tackle the climate emergency and reach net-zero emissions by 2030.

Exxon shareholders reject all climate resolutions at company’s AGM

On Wednesday 25 May, shareholders at ExxonMobil rejected all of the non-binding climate resolutions at its AGM in Dallas as they were recommended to do by the company’s Board of Directors, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the engagement approach pursued by the Church of England and other investors.

Recent investigations revealed that Exxon knew about the reality of climate change as early as the 1970s, yet poured resources into publicly denying climate change for years. The company is now under investigation by the FBI, at the request of the Department for Justice. Read more

Church of Scotland divests from coal and tar sands

The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has voted to divest from companies involved in the extraction and sale of coal and tar sands. It asked its investors to engage with other fossil fuel companies and agreed that the Church and Society Council should report back its findings to the General Assembly in 2018. Read more

James Buchanan joins ON as Bright Now Campaigner

We’re delighted to welcome James Buchanan as our new Bright Now Campaigner. James brings a wealth of experience, skills and ideas having worked for CAFOD, Christian Aid and the Church of England. He will be known to many ON supporters from his previous roles as a Campaigns Assistant, Diocesan Officer and Support Officer with CAFOD, and as a Volunteer Development Officer and Intern for Christian Aid.  Read more

New funding for Bright Now from Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts

We are delighted to announce that the Ashton Trust, JJ Charitable Trust, and the Mark Leonard Trust – three of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts acting under the banner of the Climate Change Coalition – have offered funding towards the Bright Now campaign over the next two years. The funding means that we can continue to develop and expand Bright Now and to recruit a Campaigner to lead the next phase of the campaign.
