13 Anglican bishops and 78 clergy have signed a letter calling on the Church of England’s General Synod to support an amendment on fossil fuel divestment set to be tabled by the Diocese of Oxford today during a debate on the Church’s approach to tackling climate change.

Our new Bright Now report looks at the role of the Churches in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
The report, Fossil free Churches: Accelerating the transition to a brighter, cleaner future, argues that the speed of transition needs to accelerate rapidly in order to keep temperature rises in line with the Paris Agreement. To accelerate the transition to a net zero carbon economy, Churches (and other investors) need to rapidly shift their investments from fossil fuel companies and reinvest in clean alternatives.

In a significant step forward for the divestment movement, New York City announced last week that it will divest its city pension funds from the fossil fuel industry.
At the same time, the city announced a lawsuit against five of the biggest oil and gas corporations for the damage caused by climate change, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Read more

Two years ago, 195 countries signed the historic Paris Agreement, committing to keep average global temperature rises ‘well below 2 degrees Celsius’, compared with pre-industrial levels. We know that in order to meet these targets, there must be a rapid transition from fossil fuels to clean alternatives, including renewable energy.
The Church can lead the way: showing their support for the Paris Agreement by committing to divest from fossil fuels. And while our national Churches are still not there yet, local churches are taking a prophetic stand on this urgent issue. Read more
