Pressure increases on Church of England to divest from ExxonMobil

The Church of England is facing increasing calls to divest from ExxonMobil ahead of the company’s AGM on Wednesday 31 May.

Exxon’s Board of Directors has advised shareholders to vote against the climate resolution being supported by the Church Commissioners again this year. The resolution calls on ExxonMobil to report on the impact of climate policies on its business operations. Read more

Bishops and clergy call for fossil free pensions from Church of England

Three Church of England bishops are among the signatories to an open letter sent to the Church of England Pensions Board, asking them to divest from fossil fuel companies and to invest in renewable alternatives. Read more

Church of England launches ‘Transition Pathway Initiative’ engagement framework

Today the Church of England joined the Environment Agency Pension Fund, the LSE’s Grantham Institute and various asset owners in launching the Transition Pathway Initiative, its framework for engagement with fossil fuel companies. Other partners include the Central Finance Board of the Methodist Church and CCLA. Read more

Global fossil fuel divestment commitments double to more than $5 trillion in a year

On Monday 12 December, a year on from the Paris Agreement, it was revealed that the divestment movement has doubled in size since September 2015.

The newly published Divest-Invest report shows that global divestment commitments have been made by 688 institutions across 76 countries, reaching an incredible $5.2 trillion of assets under management. Furthermore, asset managers controlling $1.3 trillion – a quarter of the total – have committed to increasing their investments in clean energy to speed up the transition to a low-carbon economy. Church Divestment and Investment for a Zero-Carbon Economy – skill-up day report

On Saturday 19 November, Operation Noah and Quaker Peace & Social Witness organised a skill-up day for campaigners and church treasurers, entitled ‘Church Divestment and Investment for a Zero-Carbon Economy’, which was attended by 40 people from across the churches. The event offered participants the chance to learn more about the range of alternative investment options available, how to divest and reinvest in practice and campaigning for divestment and reinvestment in their churches.
